Frequently Asked Questions

Get answers to common queries regarding Sewage Treatment Plants (STP), municipal regulations, and treatment processes in India.

A sewage treatment plant (STP) is a facility that removes contaminants from domestic or industrial sewage to produce water safe for discharge or reuse, using a combination of physical, biological and chemical processes.
Most sewage treatment plants operate in four stages: preliminary treatment (screening out large debris), primary treatment (settling out solids), secondary treatment (biological breakdown of organic matter), and tertiary treatment (disinfection and polishing before discharge or reuse).
Treated STP water meets standards for discharge, irrigation, gardening, flushing and industrial reuse, but it is not treated to drinking-water standards unless it goes through additional advanced purification such as RO and disinfection specifically designed for potable use.
The cost of a sewage treatment plant depends on capacity (measured in KLD or MLD), technology (SBR, MBBR, MBR, etc.), site conditions and civil work required — contact our team for a project-specific quote.
BOD (Biochemical Oxygen Demand) measures the amount of oxygen microorganisms need to break down organic matter in sewage — a key indicator of how much organic pollution is present before and after treatment.
COD (Chemical Oxygen Demand) measures the total amount of oxygen required to chemically oxidize both organic and inorganic matter in wastewater, giving a broader pollution measure than BOD alone.
Common sewage treatment plant types include SBR (Sequential Batch Reactor), MBBR (Moving Bed Biofilm Reactor), MBR (Membrane Bioreactor), SAFF (Submerged Aerated Fixed Film), and conventional Extended Aeration Systems (EAS) — each suited to different capacity and space requirements.
In the biological (secondary) treatment stage, microorganisms consume and break down organic pollutants in sewage, converting them into simpler, less harmful substances and reducing the overall organic load of the water.
Odor in a sewage treatment plant is typically managed through proper aeration control, regular desludging, biofilters or chemical odor-control units, and correct plant sizing to avoid overloading the biological treatment process.
India has thousands of sewage treatment plants across municipal and industrial sectors, with numbers growing steadily as urban infrastructure and pollution-control regulations expand — exact national counts vary by state and are tracked by pollution control boards.
